Madame Ivonne     Madame Yvonne

Music: Eduardo Pereyra
Lyrics: Enrique Cadícamo
Rec. by Ricardo Tanturi
with Alberto Castillo

Recited 21 Feb. 07, Divino Lounge

Mademoiselle Yvonne was a young girl yet
in old Montmartre's hip quarter back in the day,
and with her flirty looks the glad grisette
lit up each bash at the Four Arts cabaret.
She was the darling of all the Latin quarter,
who'd inspired many an inkpot into rhyme,
till one day an Argentine fellow came to court her,
and taught the young French girl what's in a sigh.

Madame Ivonne...
Madame Ivonne...
fue como el signo de tu suerte.
Alondra gris,
tu dolor me conmueve;
tu pena es de nieve,
Madame Ivonne...

Madame Yvonne...
the Southern Cross was like a sign,
Madame Yvonne...
it was like a sign of your destiny...
Gray little lark,
I'm touched to see your woe;
your sorrow's made of snow,
Madame Yvonne...

She sailed from France's shores ten years ago,
and the mademoiselle's just a "madam" today,
who sips her champagne, eyes ready to flow,
when she sees how it all went drifting away...
Now she's no longer the Latin quarter's prize,
or the scrappy fleur-de-lis with her hot-to-trot way,
she has nothing left... not even the Argentine guy
who took her from Paris between tango and his maté.
