La abandoné y no sabía     I left her and I had no idea

Music & lyrics: José Canet

Amasado entre oro y plata,
de serenatas
   y de fandangos...
Acuñado entre los sones
de bandoneones
   nació este tango.
Nació por verme sufrir,
en este horrible vivir
   donde agoniza mi suerte.
Cuando lo escucho al sonar,
cuando lo salgo a bailar
   siento más cerca la muerte.
Y es por eso que esta noche,
siento el reproche
   del corazón.

In a woven gold and silver braid,
of serenades
   and of fandangos...
coined amid the sounding tones
of bandoneóns
   was born this tango.
It was born by seeing me suffer,
in this horrible life
where my luck is in agony.
When I hear it played by the band,
and when to dance it I stand,
I feel my death all the closer.
And that's the reason why tonight
I feel the spite
   of my own heart.

La abandoné y no sabía
de que la estaba queriendo
y desde que ella se fue
siento truncada mi fe
que va muriendo, muriendo...
La abandoné y no sabía
que el corazón me engañaba
y hoy que la vengo a buscar
ya no la puedo encontrar
adonde iré sin su amor.

I left her and I had no idea
what it was that I wanted,
and from the time she set off
I felt my own faith cut off,
dying more with each day...
I left her and I had no idea
that my heart had deceived me
and now as I search around
I know she's not to be found
where I go lacking her love.

Al gemir de los violines,
los bailarines
   van suspirando.
Cada cual con su pareja
las penas viejas
   va recordando.
Y yo también que en mi mal
sufro la angustia fatal
de no tenerla en mis brazos.
Hoy la quisiera encontrar,
para poderla besar
y darle el alma a pedazos...
Pero inutil ya no puedo
y en sombras quedo
   con mi ilusión.

As violins begin their crying,
the dancers' sighing
   begins to flow.
In every couple there together,
they now remember
   their former woe.
And I as well in my sorrowed state
suffer the harsh fate
of having arms that can't hold her.
I wish I could meet her today,
and kiss her face right away
and give her my shattered soul...
But I can't, there's no way,
and in shadows I bide
   my last hopes away.
