Duelo criollo     Dagger duel

Music: Juan Razzano
Lyrics: Lito Bayardo
Rec. by Francisco Canaro
  Tr. Jake Spatz
Recited 17 May 2006, Divino Lounge

   Mientras la luna serena
baña con su luz de plata,
como un sollozo de pena
se oye cantar su canción:
   la canción dulce y sentida
que todo el barrio escuchaba
cuando el silencio reinaba
en el viejo caseron.

   Whenever the moon's calm glow
bathes all in a silver shine,
you can hear, like a sob of woe,
the singing of his song:
   the ballad sweet and heartfelt
that once held the town in thrall
when silence ruled the halls
of the grand old country house.

   Cuentan que fue
la moza del arrabal,
la flor del barrio aquel,
que amaba un payador:
solo para ella cantó el amor
al pie de su ventanal...
   Pero otro amor
por aquella mujer
nacio en el corazón
de un mozo del lugar,
que un farol en duelo criollo vió,
bajo su debil luz, morir los dos...

   They say she was
the lass of the neighborhood,
the rose of the railroad town,
who loved a troubadour—
only for her would he sing of love
down at the foot of her windowsill...
   Except the lass
had inspired another love
to spring to life in the heart
of one of the local guys—
till a streetlight saw them in a dagger duel,
and beneath its fading light, it saw them die...

   Por eso gimen las noches
de tan silenciosa calma
esa canción que es el broche
de aquel amor que pasó...
   De pena la linda moza
abrió bien anchas sus alas,
y con su virtud y sus galas
hasta el cielo se voló.

And when it's a calm, hushed night,
the dark itself now moans
this old song that still unites
the two in their love gone by...
In her grief, the pretty girl,
she spread her wings wide as her arms,
and with her good name and her charms
she blew away to the sky.
