THE 2005 NEW ORLEANS TANGOFEST

The DVD chronicles the best and worst of the times before and after Katrina in a film that it is as heartbreaking as it is inspired. Many memories of the Festival are documented...informal scenes from the Hotel Monaco lobby...the classes ... the Student Showcase. In the main show, RED HOT TANGO, the history of the development of the dance we know as tango is portrayed not only through a series of live performances, but in a remarkably comprehensive and well researched presentation, with stills, film and vocal script.

LIVE FROM THE TANGO BELT - A Tango Gumbo

A Planet Tango original production taped live at the 2003 New Orleans TangoFest

"In the early days of the twentieth century, 1913 to 1917 to be exact, on a few streets, in a corner of the French Quarter of New Orleans next to the old Storyville red light district, a new wave of entertainment surfaced."
"Cabarets, theaters, bars and dance halls thrived around the central motif of the tango. These few blocks in this magic moment became known as The Tango Belt!"
"While the tango fiends of New Orleans ruled the roost, it being a port city and all, the dirty ol’ Mississippi often washed up some characters from far away places. Visitors came from far away places in North and South America. Hot and sassy dancers begun to crowd the dance floor of the Black Orchid."
"The Black Orchid was a place known for presenting some saucy tango entertainment."
"Even though the inhabitants of this fair city were known for making all feel real welcome, they still got a little itchy when it looked like they were being shown up. TangoMan and La Mariposa ruled as king and queen of the Tango Belt but tonight they may have to take a seat for TANGO'S EMPRESS OF THE UNIVERSE!"

Starring Guillermina Quiroga, Alberto Catala, Valorie Hart, Alberto Paz and the New Orleans Tango Fiends.

NOSTALGIA? A tango road movie

On the ocassion of the tenth anniversary of tango legend Astor Piazzolla's death, Dutch bandoneon player Carel Kraayenhof traveled to Buenos Aires with his Sexteto Canyengue. Director Wouter Hasebos follows Carel to an almost bankrupt country that has not good reasons to celebrate. As in a musical road movie, Kraayenhof experiences the nostalgia, homesickness and displacement that's so intrinsic to the raw essence of the tango, while performing at the Teatro Colon with legendary Sexteto Mayor, meeting leading Argentine musicians and paying a poignant visit to an impoverished music school he raised money for in the Netherlands. Length, 55 minutes.

Available in NTSC and PAL DVD format with English subtitles for $20 including shipment within the USA.
