Mercedes Simone (1904-1990), sometimes known
as
"La negra" (the black one) belonged to a unique generation that paved
the
way for women in tango. With her mezzo-soprano register, slow rhythm
and
perfect diction, she is considered to have had the finest voice among
the
rich generation of great women singers of the mid 1920s. She turned to
singing
after marrying guitarist Pablo Rodriguez. She made her debut in the
mid-1920s
at the legendary Cafe Nacional. Her career in radio, theatre, films and
recordings survived into the television era, but came to an end when
she
underwent a throat operation in the 1960s. In 1933 she also took part
in
"Tango" -the first talking picture- with her song “Cantando” which is
her
best-known song. She used it at the beginning and at the end of all her
performances. Source: El Firulete

I no longer have the sweetness of your
kisses,
I roam alone in the world, without love. Another happier mouth will be the owner of his kisses that were all my passion. There are moments when I don’t know what is happening to me, I have urges to laugh and to cry. I am jealous, I am afraid that he won't return. And I want him, I can't help it. Singing I gave him my heart, my love, and since he left, I sing my pain. Singing I found him, singing I lost him Because I don't know how to cry, singing I shall die. Miraculous virgin, forgive me if singing this song that lives in me I ask you to bring me what is mine, that so quickly and without reason I lost. If it is a sin to love so much in this life I ask you, on my knees, for your pardon. I love him so much that I will die If I lack the caresses of his love. Singing I gave him my heart, my love, and since he left, I sing my pain. Singing I found him, singing I lost him Because I don't know how to cry, singing I shall die. |
